Located on a Malibu hillside and overlooking the Pacific Ocean this contemporary re-envisioned project of Patrick Tighe Architecture is fresh, sunny and elegantly minimalistic. Placing great care and attention towards the sustainability and the environmental – upgrade of the existing property the architects succeeded in turning the relatively small home into gallery-like space full with light and granting clever exhibiting niches for the owner’s large contemporary art collection.
The artful and welcoming interior design with its modern edge and minimalistic approach starts with bespoke entrance door creation. Using a hydraulic pivot this 10 meters high door with its shadow and light play is a well spotted “face” for the entire house. Throughout the premises, the lighting solutions – from skylights to artistic lamps – play significant role into the interior design. Shadow and light and their reflections play on to the simple color palette – gray, white and black reflect perfectly the blue azure of the ocean and create clean, sunny space to inhabit. In the living spaces, the furniture is minimalistic with clear and elegant lines and unostentatious colors and textures. The gray ascetic of walls, carpets and textiles is esthetically underlined by the occasional contemporary shape of furniture and lamps. The material palette is modern, sustainable and functional, which does not undermine its artistry. Wonderful example of this artistic trend is the bespoke cantilevered steel staircase with its laser-cut patterns on each tread. Photography: Art Gray Photography, Bran Arifin Photography
