Designing your Kitchen
8.03.2012
Designing your own kitchen can seem like a daunting task at first, with what seems like an almost infinite number of things to take into consideration. Whether you’re starting again from scratch or remodelling an existing kitchen, follow these stages to keep your approach organised!

Initial Planning Stage
A great way to map out a kitchen is by using a kitchen planner. To get started think about what you use your kitchen for. Do you fancy yourself a gourmet chef, or are you more of a microwave meal type? How many people use your kitchen? Think carefully about how you use your kitchen and what features are important to you, then make a list.
Floor Plan
The second stage is to come up with a rough sketch of a floor plan, outlining how you want your kitchen to be laid out. Take measurements of the room and try to keep your plan to scale. It’s advisable at this point to take into account where you will put storage facilities such as cupboards and drawers.
Products and Features
Now that you have your floor plan, you can start to play around with the extra features from the planning stage that you designated as important. Consider how you will incorporate white goods, taking electrical and gas points into careful consideration.
Decoration
Now that you have the bare bones of your kitchen in place, you can go about starting to inject your personal style into the room, adding quirks such as tile backsplashes and lighting. Consider which colour you want the room to be overall – light neutral colours often work best and give a clean appearance.
Designing your own kitchen can be confusing, but if you follow the above steps you’re sure to stay in control and create a room that you can really be proud of.
